The big freeze has been and gone. All that maths is finally over, and the invitations to the 2026 WFTDA European Championships in Namur have been sent. Between now and the first whistle on June 12th, we are going to be shining a spotlight on the incredible Euro Derby Dozen who will be descending on Belgium. In absolutely no particular order, this series will break down the strategies, the identities, and the unsung heroes of Europe’s elite, hearing from the skaters and teams themselves.
If you are looking for the ultimate underdog-turned-powerhouse story of the European postseason, look no further than Catalunya. Barcelona Roller Derby (whose A team skates under the brilliant moniker Ingles de Acero/Groins of Steel) are rolling into Belgium with a philosophy built on stability, grit, and a fearless mentality. Ready to prove that the fruits of their steel-girded loins over the last few years have created a roster capable of standing wheel to wheel with the absolute best in Europe.
Here is the essential intel on Catalunya’s heavy hitters:

Strategy: 28 to 9 Pipeline
While some leagues experience frequent turnover from season to season or scramble for last-minute transfer skaters to bump their rankings, Barcelona’s secret weapon heading into the European Championships is their solid foundation. Their preparation hasn’t just been about the last few months of frantic game play; it’s the culmination of years of collective effort.
And the results speak for themselves…
“Did you guys know that Barcelona was 28th in Europe in April 2024? Just two years ago!” shared Leon #19, reflecting on the journey. “We worked really damn hard to get to that 9th [seed] and we are quite proud of making it.”

Brawlcelona – On & Off Skates
A meteoric climb like this was no accident. A big catalyst for that growth has been their commitment to bringing top competition straight to their doorstep. Through their legendary annual tournament, Brawlcelona, the league has consistently tested themselves against the continent’s best.
“We’re lucky to have a group of skaters (in both teams A and B), bench staff and volunteers that has remained incredibly stable over the last few years, and this has given us the opportunity to grow significantly,” the team shared. “We believe it’s down to a combination of many factors, and we want to emphasise that it’s the result of the hard work of everyone involved in the league – both those who skate with us and those who don’t.”
And this deep-rooted support system feeds directly into their overarching focus for Namur:
“To build a team that relishes a challenge, that is capable of playing the best roller derby possible, and that, as a team, can provide a space where every skater can be the best version of themselves.”
Identity: Anvil & Hammer
When Barcelona takes the track, opponents are forced to deal with a tricky two-pronged assault. On one side, you have a crushing, unified defence that acts as an anvil. On the other, you have incredibly unpredictable jammers acting as the hammer.
“Barcelona Roller Derby stands out for its solid defence when it comes to our blockers,” the team explained. “As for our jammers, I’d say the most notable thing is their wide variety of styles – we have everything from jammers who use lots of jukes to those who rely more on sheer power.”
Duality like this makes them an absolute nightmare for opposing bench coaches to plan against. If you can’t predict whether you are going to get danced around on the edges or completely bulldozed on the inside line, you’re going to struggle to find the right line up & match ups.

Unsung Heroes: Ass & Fuego
When asked who the fans should be watching out for, Barcelona was quick to praise their entire roster’s lethal potential before highlighting two absolute defensive anchors that you do not want to find yourself trapped behind…
“I’d say all our players are dangerous in their own way, but if I had to single anyone out, I’d say Ass for her impenetrable defence and Fuego for her blocks on the back line.”
If you are an opposing jammer looking for an easy pass, Ass & Fuego are going to make sure that door is firmly slammed shut.
Forged in Steel: Historic Postseason Debut
This is it! The moment they have been building towards. For the very first time in their history, Barcelona Roller Derby is stepping onto the WFTDA postseason stage.
To understand the magnitude of this debut, you have to look at where they were just a fraction of a season ago. Sitting at 28th in Europe in April 2024, they were outside looking in. But rather than accept their standing, Barcelona dug deep, harnessed the power of their steady roster, and systematically hammered away at their ranking deficit. Now, entering Namur as the 9th seed, they aren’t just here to make up the numbers; they are here to prove that a historic debut can easily become a historic upset. They’ve kicked the door in, and now they are ready to make themselves right at home among Europe’s top dogs.

Namur Forecast
Barcelona is bringing a profound sense of gratitude and excitement to Belgium, but do not mistake that gratitude for complacency. Because they are so used to hosting European powerhouses at Brawlcelona, they aren’t intimidated by the big stage. They are eager to test their mettle against the highest seeds the continent has to offer.
“For us, simply taking part in this tournament with our skater accreditation is an event in itself; that said, we’re looking forward to seeing Malmö, Toulouse, Rainy City… and all the teams in general – it’ll be a great opportunity,” they noted.
With their eyes firmly set on the challenge ahead, Barcelona is ready to prove exactly why they belong in the Top 12.
